I use a UV filter, mostly as just protection.

I use UV filters because I don't have an air blower and filters are "sacrificial".

I use UV filters as protection for that front element. Note: They do not work as protection from an NHL hockey puck at full-speed. You WILL need a new lens after that.

I have only just recently started to put UV filters onto my glass. Like people here, solely for protection. All Hoya HD, few circular polars aswell. Now i have them on i wouldnt be without them, easier to clean, haven't noticed any degradation image to be honest.
