Forum > What got you into photography
Originally, My mother.. She had an old Pentax - I wasn't allowed to touch it. So, as every kid does, I waited until she was out of the house and "took it for a ride" When she got her film back a few weeks later, I'd forgotten that I had "taken a few shots" and was called to a "round table" discussion... The cane was out - but, it turned out that mum liked me shots (I was 8!) and, so did I... That's where it all began
Probably losing my vision just as digital photography started coming into its own. I enjoy seeing what I missed because of my eyesight when I bring my camera home and get the images onto the monitor.
Wow, how bad is your vision?
I have always had a fascination with photography, but while growing up, my family could not afford to get me any photo gear. At one point in my younger years I worked in a Salvation Army warehouse and some one dropped off a bunch of old Nikon film gear and I was hooked. I worked with that system for a couple of years and then made the plunge into digital.
i remember my school trips to washington, dc (where i now reside) as a child; my mom would chaperone and we always took tons of pictures. i also remember, again, as a child, my mom and i took a trip to nyc w/ the recreation dept. and we took the ferry and captured various images of lady liberty. we also went inside and took pictures.
as i got older, my interest in photography grew although i'm really just getting back into it actively. so, my superwoman mom sparked my interest a long time ago.

:My mom oversees the yearbook photography at the high school that I attended. For some reason I didn't get into it on a school level back then but I always loved having a camera in my hand.... felt natural with it. So after working a dead end job for almost three years after high school, I went back to school for digital art. The whole way through school I was taking alot of pictures for my design projects and I enjoyed that part more than I did the design. I had access to rebels there at the art institute but I have always had access to the cameras in my moms department....first 20D's then 30D's and 40D's. They also got a ahold (got ahold = very long story) of a 1Ds... probably one of the only high schools in the country with one, so I have had as much experience as possible with that camera too. Owned a 30D after school but upgraded to the 40D when it came out and started buying lens's. The design and marketing background is helping so much since things like resolution are second nature to me and just digital software in general comes quickly since I learned Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, After Effects, Dreamweaver, and Final Cut Studio in a fast paced environment during school. The learning curve with Aperture was really quick for me and I have been loving it for over a year. The 40D with at least the 24-70 2.8L, 50 1.4 and lensbaby composer come with me to work everyday and I really try to use them everyday.:

My dad let me take his Pentax MX on my first vacation on my own, together with my best girl friend at that time, who wanted to read a lot of books. I took a many B&W photos, then met other photographers and learned dark room techniques. I was so intrigued with expression through photography that within half a year of this trip I applied at an academy of art for photography (in the Netherlands). To my big surprise I was accepted. I can't believe now that I declined - for a variety of reasons and missed a great chance to become a professional photographer.
My DAD is the one who got me started. I must have been 10 or so and he bought me a Kodak 120 I took this thing everywhere. I graduated to a used Konica 35mm SLR (which promptly fell apart. Now I have a Nikon P50 and a D40. I was OK with the point and shoot but never great I hope to get to great with this new gear.
My mother is an artist so I used to admire some of her work and she would tell me about composition, color, etc..
In high school I was a part-time reporter and I loved going out into the field and taking photos.
When I graduated college, I finally bought a Sony DSLR, and now here I am!
I always liked taking photos and always had a point and shoot with me on holidays, school trips, etc.
I used to get increasingly frustrated with the limitations of my old digital point and shoot. When we had kids my wife mentioned that we were missing lots of great shots. When I said to her that I had wanted a DSLR for a while she thought it was a great idea and so, after lots of research and speaking to friends in the know, I bought the Nikon D3K and am in my second week of using it.
I started getting into photography when I was in 9th grade shooting with my mom's old Pentax film camera. Shooting eagles and deer. I really wish I would have gotten further into it back then but I kinda put the camera down for a few years and finally bought a point and shoot my sophmore year of college and got into it again. Shortly after I bought my first DLSR, an Olympus E-500 with two kit lenses. 14-50? and a 50-150? Played with that for a few years and still didn't get that serious with it. Everyone said I had an eye for it but I still wasn't getting into M mode or anything. I just recently started shooting weddings with a friend and realized my potential in portrait photography. So when Uncle Sam was generous this year I splurged and bought a Nikon D90 and a few lenses. Wish I would've went prime right away but I was spending $2,400 the way it was. :S But now I am shooting A LOT. Probably enough to annoy my family. :P but I plan on shooting through the summer and building a portfolio and assisting a friend as a second shooter all summer so hopefully I can start something up of my own next spring! Wow! What? you didn't want a life story? lol sorry

Hello everyone, I decided that it would be fun to start a place where all the readers can interact and have discussions. The first discussion I wanted to open up to everyone is what go you into photography?
Feel free to start your own threads.
